🏏 IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Shubman Gill Points to Rishabh Pant’s Run-Out as the Turning Point in Lord’s Defeat

London, July 15, 2025 – In a gripping Test match at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, Team India narrowly missed out on victory as England defeated them by 22 runs in the third Test. With the series now tilting 2-1 in England’s favor, Indian skipper Shubman Gill reflected on the loss and identified Rishabh Pant’s run-out as the key moment that swung the momentum away from India.

Shubman Gill Opens Up After Defeat

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill candidly admitted,

“The most important moment for us was Rishabh’s run-out. At that stage, we were in control. If we had managed a 50 or 100-run lead, the outcome could’ve been very different.”

Pant, who looked in good touch and was building a strong partnership with KL Rahul, was dismissed due to a mix-up that cost India dearly. Gill, however, defended Rahul from blame and called it “an error in judgment.”

Momentum Shifted After Pant’s Exit

India were in a strong position during their first innings but lost quick wickets after Pant’s dismissal. Though Ravindra Jadeja and the lower order put up a brave resistance in the fourth innings, the target of 193 remained out of reach. India was bowled out for 170 despite Jadeja’s valiant 61 not out.

Gill also praised the lower order’s fighting spirit:

“The way Jadeja and our tail batted gave us hope till the very end. Their intent and composure were commendable.”

England Hold Nerve in Pressure Situations

England, led by Ben Stokes and a returning Jofra Archer, delivered under pressure. Stokes not only took key wickets but also affected the crucial run-out of Pant. Shoaib Bashir, playing with a fractured finger, claimed the final wicket of the match—bowling out Mohammed Siraj—to seal a dramatic win for the hosts.

India’s Top Order Collapses Costly Again

India’s batting once again came under scrutiny. In the second innings, the top order collapsed, leaving the middle and lower order with too much to do. Gill accepted that the team “could have applied ourselves better” during the chase.

“When you are chasing a small target, partnerships are everything. We couldn’t build those at the top. That cost us the game.”

What’s Next?

With two Tests remaining in the series, India will need to regroup quickly. The fourth Test begins on July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester. The visitors will be looking to level the series, while England will aim to seal it with a match to spare.
